ad was misleading July 12, 2010 cmh 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
THIS WAS MIS-LEADING ! This is a router only, not a combination router/cable gateway. I oredered this and was dismayed to find that I had to waste time returning this, because I needed a DSL gateway. Atlanta Technologies wasted my time.
Powerful Little Router July 2, 2010 Charles I bought this item for $10 at Salvation Army thrift store. I called tech support for some easy setup. It's been running rock solid for two days connected 1 macbook pro, one acer notebook, 2 iPhones, etc. Has never lost the connection in 2 entire days. I think this router is worth $20 - $30 used easily. A new belkin sells at Wal-Mart for about $29.99 in VA. If you get a good deal on Amazon I feel it is worth it. I have pretty heavy usage needs online and the connection with this unit for what I paid for it is above average vs my expectations of having tech problems and long setup. It couldn't have been easier. Tech support was off-shore but was effective in this case. I'll update the review after a couple of weeks but with the first 2 days of flawless service with my DSL connection and this router I felt compelled to share good info. that my unit at least has performed above and beyond my expectations so far. Even using a 3rd party power adapter.
Calling it worthless junk would be an insult to worthless junk July 1, 2010 dgatwood 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
About every 3-12 hours (depending on load), this router suddenly stops routing traffic. Or at least it used to. It has since moved on to terminating its wireless signal entirely. (I haven't tried the wired link while it is in this state.) The only thing you can do is power cycle it. I've tried firmware updates with no success. I've tried locking it to a particular wireless channel as the Belkin docs suggest. I've tried everything short of installing OpenWRT on it....
The worst thing about this router is that there are nine, count them NINE different hardware versions for this router. That likely means that they found hardware bugs sufficiently severe to warrant rolling the hardware eight times. More importantly, they roll at most one firmware update for any given rev of the hardware. They don't get one rev fully working before the Chinese manufacturer retools their line and Belkin starts rebadging a completely different piece of hardware.
This means that if your Belkin gear doesn't work perfectly out of the box, you should not count on Belkin *ever* fixing the problem with a firmware update. When we got ours, the latest firmware was already months old, and they haven't updated it since. This is a common problem with rebadgers that don't design their own hardware, and is sufficient reason by itself to completely avoid ANY Belkin-based network hardware.
Poor quality seems to be a trend with Belkin. The last product of theirs I bought prior was a USB-to-serial adapter back in 1999. Plugged it into my machine and the computer shut off. Apparently, the product was shorting the power rail to ground, and the computer's power supply decided to cut power to protect the machine. With a lesser machine, it would have fried my motherboard. Returned it for a Keyspan that still works to this day, a decade later.
In short, it's probably worth avoiding anything Belkin makes.
Super easy to install and now computer runs faster, Wireless YES June 14, 2010 kindred spirit (God's Country) My four year old "L" brand bit the dust and I could not get any tech support from my DSL provider or them router co. Without paying big money. It had always been a pain needing to be unplugged and re plugged almost daily. When you could get support you were on the phone for an hour. Not so with this. I did the easy install with the disc it came with and within 3 min I was online on laptop and desktop both older and operating with Windows XP.
I see they want you to buy 3 year warranty why would you it comes with 24/7 free tech support by a real person! It also has a lifetime warranty. What more can you ask for?
I can highly recommend this to anyone who wants fast and easy secure wifi.
Works, but don't count on it lasting April 20, 2010 G. Baker 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My review will be brief and to the point, instead of these long-winded ones.
- Not so trivial to setup...I've seen much easier.
- Hold it in your hands and recognize the flimsy craftsmanship.
- Fairly reliable. Was rather consistent with its performance, until...
- Lifetime brief.
- RESET button, which is a must with this item, is horrible. Use it once and you might break it. Instead of a BUTTON, they provide you with a hole in which to insert a slim pen or similar. Don't expect it to last.
- Buy a Linksys
