br /No problems at all in installing the router with my vista o/s. I was up in running in less than 15 minutes. This is my third D-link router and all are still up and running. I use my old ones as wireless access points. I used to by only Linksys products until they were bought out. A great product and a good value.
Works exactly like it you would expect a $150 router to work! June 8, 2010 M. Ewald (Ann Arbor, MI) I've had this product just over a month now and it really doesn't get any easier. We were having frequent disconnects with the previous linksys router, problems have all dissapeared with this beauty. We've had this for over a month and only had to reset the power once, other than that it just works. Would definitely reccomend to anyone interested in a reliable wireless router that saves bandwidth for online gaming(without the hassle-filled setup).
Maybe its me... June 7, 2010 D. Byington Set up was absolutely horrible. I put the installation disk in my computer and fallowed the instructions to the T. Somehow my computer couldnt find the router. After an hour of messing around with it I called customer support. I was connected with someone that reminded me very much of the phone operator from the first transformers movie, who talked very slow, and was very unhelpful. After a hour of this monotone torture i hung up and called asus, whom has nothing to do with the router. Still i was talking to a very helpful women 15 seconds after dialing the number. 5 minutes later i was online.
br / I bought this $180 router to replace my very used netgear wireless router. With a broken antenna the old netgear was giving my 2 bars at 10 feet, but [...] said i was getting reliable 7mbps download speeds. With the dlink i get full bars at the same distance, but the best speed ive been able to get was 5mbps, with my average test showing 3mbps. I'm going to play with it a little, just because i dont believe that the most expensive router ive ever seen can possible be such a pos. Maybe its me. Anyways my last 3 routers where netgears and ive never had problems setting them up, or had slowdowns. Id recommend avoiding this product, there are much better ones at 1/4 the price.
One of the best out there May 1, 2010 Timothy G. Blum (Amherst, NY) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We got one of these when they first came out and it has run like a champ ever since (purchased 12/2007). Have liked it so much I installed one for a friend about six months ago and it works great as well. Tons of features, including lots of security features-like most firewalled routers, if you are running a home network and have the router firewall running you really don't need to use your software firewall-if you find your software firewall impacts your computer's performance (but of course only when you are hooked up through this router at home, not when you go on some other network). Never needs rebooting due to any router issues, except when updating firmware (1.15 currently, recommend using the update option in the router settings-ours says we have latest even though there is newer firmware on Dlink site-rather than manually going to the DLink site unless you are having an issue where you need to manually update to a newer version). Occasionally if a computer freeze occurs due to overclock it will not be able to re-sync with the router and we have to manually reset to factory defaults and then re-load our settings to get internet again. But that is relatively rare-if no one is pushing a computer too hard-and an easy fix. We have a blackberry, a nexus one, a droid, a Wii, 3 laptops (one XP, one Vista, One Win7), 2 desktops (one Vista, one Win7), an HP multifunction, and a net-enabled blu-ray all hooked up to the router (all except desktops are wireless WPA2) and never a problem. It really helps if you read through all the help explanations for all of the settings if you start playing around with anything, and you will have to play around with some of the settings at a minimum such as changing passwords from default, setting your wifi bands and access keys, etc. Once you get a more elaborate network you will probably use some of the priority setting stuff or port forwarding, so check out the explanations there and if it doesn't make sense to you, don't change anything until you know what you are doing. Also be sure to save your settings every time you change something so you can go back quickly if something goes wrong (you just stick the end of a paper clip in the manual reset button on the back of the router for about 3 secs and wait for the router to reboot to factory defaults, you will be back at default no password needed, then go into router settings and load up your last saved settings file, wait for the router to reboot, then you will need to enter your password to access like before and all your settings are loaded-takes about 2 minutes). Some of the poor reviews may be based on people who do not really know too much about router set-up, I think. Also, routers like any device will have better success with some network setups vs. others, depending on how complicated you get. Remember, unplugging the router from the wall won't necessarily reset everything if you have a problem-you need to use the manual reset button on the back (paper clip) to go back to factory defaults and then reload your saved settings file. And make sure you make any changes from a computer that is hard-wired not wireless (makes it much easier if you need to reset the router).
