Product Description The D-Link RangeBooster N Dual Band Router (DIR-628) is designed for users looking to create a high-performance wireless network. Connect the RangeBooster N Dual Band Router to a cable or DSL modem and provide high-speed Internet access to multiple computers, game consoles, and media players. Create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, printers, and more, from greater distances throughout your entire home or office. A QoS engine is also included to prioritize time-sensitive online traffic for enabling smooth Internet phone calls (VoIP) and responsive gaming. The dual band technology in the DIR-628 supports selectable 2.4GHz or 5GHz wireless signals. This allows you to check e-mail and browse the Internet using the 2.4GHz band or stream HD movies and other media on the 5GHz band. 5GHz is ideal for wirelessly streaming multiple HD videos across your network. It helps avoid interference by providing a clearer wireless band for HD signals than existing 802.11g products. The RangeBooster N Router supports the latest wireless security features to help prevent unauthorized access, be it from over a wireless network or from the Internet. Support for WPA and WPA2 standards ensure that you will be able to use the best possible encryption, regardless of your client devices. In addition, this RangeBooster N router utilizes dual active firewalls (SPI and NAT) to help prevent potential attacks from across the Internet. Delivering unmatched wireless performance, network security, and coverage, the RangeBooster N Dual Band Router (DIR-628) is ideal for networking in larger homes and offices.

Painful to install July 18, 2010 KM3 (USA) This thing was a huge pain to install. I was never actually able to get it setup and running. I've got a Lenovo laptop PC with a DVD drive. When I inserted the CD to install the wireless router, my PC wouldn't recognize the install CD. I've tried on different PC, but still no joy. I tried checking at the D-link web site to download the CD software, but finding on their web site as a download was equally impossible.

br /This thing is going back to the store tomorrow and I'm looking for another brand wireless router.

br /My advice, pass on D-link and find a more user friendly brand. No one needs this kind of aggravation when setting up a device.
Shocked that it Worked so Well! July 7, 2010 N. Coleman (Texas) I'm writing this review from a non-technical perspective but based solely upon my personal experience with the DIR-628. My husband and I are both technical savvy people. Our older NETGEAR WGT624 v3 router was showing some signs of wear and tear plus it couldn't keep a signal. We decided to purchase the D-Link DIR-628. So far this router has been amazing. The signal strength all over the house is very strong. We haven't had any network issues or problems with our electronics getting a connection. We have a wireless Lexmark printer, 2 laptops, Desktop computer, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 and an iPad all sharing the same network through this router. We haven't had any drop issues with any of the items listed above. All of the above items are located in different areas of the house except for the Wii and PS3 which are both in the family room. We have a single level home so I'm not sure if the signal strength that we're experiencing would be the same for those people living in homes with more than one level. At first we thought we would to have to purchase a wireless repeater but didn't have to because the DIR-628's signal is so strong in our home. The router was easy to install and we got it up and running very quickly....in a matter of minutes. The longest part was changing the network settings on every device throughout the home.
Not easy to setup on mulitiple computers June 27, 2010 R. Lipman (SE Coast) I purchased this router to enable 4 laptops to wirelessly connect to a single printer. I needed a new wifi router and I investigated a separate wifi print server but decided an integrated solution should work better. Hence my purchases.

br /I first tried to set it up on a Vista laptop...after a few starts and stops, I got it set up and working. Connection speed and signal stability are fine. I then tried to set up a connection on an XP laptop. After several unsuccessful attempts, a web search indicated that I needed to install the SP3 update (which I had not done previously). After the update, I was able to connect to the router and 'net.
br /
br /Next step- Shareport. After 2 attempts, I was able to install Shareport onto the Vista machine. I know that Shareport only works on 1 machine at a time and this should not be an issue long term.
br /
br /I then tried to install Shareport onto an XP laptop. I can get the software installed, and the software sees the printer, but I can not establish a connection between the laptop/shareport software and the printer. I am stalled at this point. I will update my review when/if I make further progress.

br /So far this is not an easy router to set up. I suppose if we want "N" speed connection speed and additional features, we have to put up with more complicated setup procedures. Previous generation wifi routers were ridiculously easy to set up and use. Not this one.
Clearance Item June 25, 2010 Sue B. Honey (Tallahassee, FLA) I picked up this router as a clearance item at a big box retailer. For [...] bucks I figured that I couldn't go wrong for a replacement on a g router that was starting to go bad. One nice feature is the ability to network as USB device, which in our case is a printer.

br /Many peeps report having firmware troubles. Some of that may be resolved by following the advice at D-Link: "Do NOT upgrade firmware on any D-Link product over a wireless connection. Failure of the device may result. Use only hard-wired network connections."
A Very Good Router June 1, 2010 Ronald Hammond (Key West, FL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This duel band router seems to be quite a deal, less than a hundred bucks, but sadly it can't broadcast both bands at once. That being said it seems fast, faster than the aging router I replaced. However, I'd upgraded my computer six months ago and was using the old router with the new machine, now I'm really up to speed.

br /This black router is seems a bit thin compared to my old one, but it works great. Setting it up was a breeze thanks to the setup wizard. Once I finished the wizard saved my settings, then I was taken into a browser like utility and the D-Link tools and more wizards which walk you the firewall, MAC filtering, how you want the router to broadcast (I picked 5GHz) and the router's other tools.
br /
br /Important for me was how far the router broadcast and this one passed the test in my house. I have it in the living room, where the cable comes in and I have no problem getting a signal way out in my backyard. In fact, I went next door and was still getting my signal just fine and I have given my gal pal's daughter who lives there the password, she just got a laptop for college and is stoked that she'll be getting the internet for free.
br /
br /This is a good router. It does what it's supposed to do and it does it well. The only drawback is that it doesn't broadcast in both bands at once, one or the other, for me it's not a problem, but it might be for you.
