2 out of 5 stars Beware of firmware 2.03NA   July 21, 2010

I've had this router for nearly 6 months now. I've only had 2 issues with router up till now. First issue is with firmware 2.02NA and the problem is has with MAC addresses not beginning in 00. Devices not beginning with 00 connect fine, but if you want to set up DHCP reservation or any web filters you won't be able to. However there is a newer version of the firmware, 2.03NA. More on that in a minute. The second issue was with the Shareport. While it works great, if you power off the device, a printer in my case, it doesn't reconnect properly. You have to reboot the router for it to reconnect correctly. This issue was also fixed in the new firmware update. While the new update fixes these problems it creates worse ones. The 802.11n throughput drops from 15MB/s to a measly 3-4MB/s, regardless if its over 2.4GHz or 5GHz. The other issue it creates is that it disconnects idle TCP sessions, including VPNs. Very annoying. I rolled back to 2.02NA, decided to write this review to warn potential buyers. The only reason I bought this particular dual-band simultaneous router was for the printer sharing. Other dual-band simultaneous routers have USB ports but they only do storage sharing. Hope D-link fixes these problems soon, so I can give a better review, until then, this stands, angrily.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible   July 19, 2010

There are currently two DIR-825 devices on the market. They look slightly different if you look at them very closely. I've tried both in my home, and they are very frustrating to work with. D-link does not test their products before they release them. Instead, the rely on their customers to voice issues, and subsequently, they release firmware upgrades. br / br /After a little bit of research, I came across a D-link forum where consumers are complaining with the issue I am having trouble with: br /[..] br / br /If you're laptop/computer's wireless card has a MAC address that begins with something other than '00', like 78:e4:00:53:07:41 for example, this router will keep causing your device to disconnect. Some users complain their device won't even connect. I know for a fact, that when you try to 'reserve' an IP address that has a MAC address that does NOT begin with '00', the router complains that you have entered an 'invalid MAC address'. br / br /I may have not described the problem accurately, but to the best of my knowledge, this is just ONE of the PRESENT issue's I am facing. The forum link above, would be the ideal place for you to read more. I've had other issues in the past, that SEEM to have been resolved with firmware upgrades, but that really is not the correct way of keeping your customers happy and providing them with useful, high-quality, and reliable technology. In addition to that, this is one of their most advanced, and most expensive consumer routers. br / br /I've had also had very similar experiences with a lower end D-Link router. The routers are buggy and need to continually be updated. It's safe to say, I will not be buying another D-link product for a very long time.

1 out of 5 stars Sounds good on paper...   July 15, 2010

The new dual band N router has been a very big disappointment overall. On the upside, the features are super rich in comparison to my old Linksys. Lots more feature set to tinker with if you like to get your geek on. An interesting thing, there are separate SSIDs for th 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz ... so you actually setup 2 different networks (same security key). This is cool, b/c you point your 5GHZ enabled devices to one SSID, and your 2.4's to the other SSID to isolate your traffic / network contention. Now the ugly - The 5Ghz network is so small, that the Xbox and Blu-Ray player in the living room can't even see it from the bedroom (with only a small bathroom in between). The signal strength falls off so steep, I had to be in the room, and close to it to utilize the 5Ghz band with a decent signal. In my situation the router is approx 30 feet from my devices, and they can't even see it. I checked, and it's on max power by default. Soooo disappointing. The 2.4Ghz band goes much farther - but I would say still under-performs my old Linksys noticeably. I had a moment of hope when I thought to check the firmware - but it is running the most current, with no updates available. I will likely return it. Have had it for 2 days, and I would rather the money go to a performing N band router, even if it's single-band. After the fact, I found some reviews that state my same findings, and say the 655 does a much better job with signal (however it is not dual band). I think I may get it. Overall opinion - sounds good on paper, save your money and get something else. br /

1 out of 5 stars Blocks VoIP and printer   July 13, 2010
S. Kennedy
My home office, with computer, VoIP phone, and printer was working fine with my linksys router until I decided to upgrade my wireless network with this new router. br /As soon as I set this router up, my VoIP phone stopped working. I called my VoIP service provider, and he said these D-Link routers always cause trouble by blocking the phone service. After about an hour, we got the phone working. br /Then I realized the computer no longer recognized my printer. I called D-Link support, and the lady, who spoke poor English, told me to call my printer manufacturer. I told her I wasn't going to call my printer manufacturer, and if she couldn't get this set up, I would send the router back. She had me go to the D-Link setup in my browser and clicked around for half an hour, and it still didn't work. So now I'm down a printer because the D-Link router is blocking the connection.

5 out of 5 stars very easy to use, great so far   July 9, 2010

Using this for a few days now. I am a moderate tech junkie and had NO problems setting this up. Once the traffic from my stock ATT router was freed up, my internet speed doubled (connecting via gigbit)than before. I am using both wireless bands as well as gigabit to connect 3 laptops,2 Imacs, a NAS server, Apple TV, XBOX360 and the directv on-demand box. All connect to internet around 2.5mbps, both wired and wireless. My dsl from att is 3.o mps max so I am getting close to max speed. All local connections via wireless or wired lan are very fast. br / br /Great product so far.
