4 out of 5 stars Important tip before initial installation   July 31, 2010
Yishay Belkind (israel)
Don't use the installation CD that comes with the product, it might have outdated software, instead go to WD support site and download the latest ISO, burn a new install CD and use that. The new updates significantly improve both installation process and the backup software. The original installation won't work in some cases at all, and the new backup improves performance and reduces resource usage. WD support site is easy to navigate and after the update this is actually a very good product, I think the original SW was half baked and many of the reviews suffer from that.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Hardware for the money, but software is awful   July 28, 2010

I purchased this item as a network backup device for my Windows, Mac Linux computers. I'm pretty happy with the capacity of the drive, and the firmware's feature set is acceptable (supporting FTP, CIFS, AFP, etc.). Unfortunately, the backup client software (i.e. WD Anywhere Backup) is temperamental and requires additional licenses to be purchased if you plan to back up more than one computer. I've basically given up on the software and plan to use more reliable/less expensive alternatives.

3 out of 5 stars Does what it's supposed to, but skimps out on featrures   July 26, 2010
Charmaine Petgrave
As soon as I attached it to my network, I was already sharing, reading and writing files to it. br / br /Yes you can set up user permissions and group permissions (so only certain people can acess certain files) , but what about a br /BitTorrent client? I know a BitTorrent client might be a little much to ask for. But the main reason I bought a NAS is to hold all my torrent downloads in a nice, convenient location. br / br /It was somewhat of a hassle to set up the user and group permissions. There is no Wizard to guide you through all this. br / br /All that the included CD-Rom did was find the SMB share name and mount it's IP address as a network drive. While this is definately good and simple for the beginner, I was just wondering why they choose to make it mount it's IP address, rather than its Share Name. Ip adress mounting would mean that if/when the address of the NAS changes, the user would have to pop in the CD-Rom again and remount. br / br /I know I'm using a lot of jargon. So, on a final note: this product feels less than complete.

5 out of 5 stars Great device   July 26, 2010

Works as advertised. Was easy to set up and configure and now able to access iTunes from anywhere, photos anywhere from my iPad, all media via xbox. Haven't set up backups yet but expect it will be equally easy to do.

5 out of 5 stars Works great in my Mac home network setup   July 17, 2010
J. Doyle (Orange County, California)
I wanted a network drive to backup files from my Macs to a central location. This is great, because I can leave it plugged the back room (where the modem is) and access it form anywhere via my home wireless network. br / br /It integrates seamlessly with the "WD TV Live" unit I bought at the same time...this is the only way I could figure out how to stream movies and such content from my Macbook Pro onto my Samsung LED TV wirelessly. It works great. The WD TV Live sees my Macbook pro, because it's networked to this drive wirelessly. Let me be more clear...this drive isn't wireless, but when you run an ethernet wire to it into your wireless router it can see your wireless computers too! br / br /The backup software seems to work fine on my Macbook Pro, too. br / br /It's a nice clean package, white plastic like Mac stuff usually is. The light on the front is BRIGHT, I have to hide it when we have guests sleep in that room!
