5 out of 5 stars Great range   July 31, 2010
George Gilman (Panama City, FL)
I've had several different wireless routers in the past including the DIR-825, DIR-655, and others over about the last 6 years. None of them have really ever lived up to my expectations. In each case, I would have to claim at best they "almost" worked. I could get enough signal for Internet access most anywhere around the house with occasional drop-outs. However, I could not stream video via Netflix or Windows Media Center, and the occasional dropouts were frustrating, especially getting kicked form Xbox Live. What was particularly frustrating was that between the two houses I lived in during that time frame, neither was that large. The first ~1850 square feet and the second ~2400, both single story. How do people use wireless in larger houses or with multiple floors?? br / br /For the first time, I can say I'm happy with my wireless. That is all thanks to my new WZR-HP-G300NH router. The extra power it provides over the other routers is enough to fulfill my needs. I can stream Netflix through my XBox or Tivo (both on separate wireless DAP-1522 bridges) flawlessly. Previously, IF I could get Netflix to run on either, it would be low quality and likely stop playing after the first couple of minutes. Most of the time though, I couldn't get as far as seeing the movie choices where it would time out. Now, I get great quality and have yet to have a failure. I can also stream HD movies via Windows Media Center to my XBox. Last time I attempted, I couldn't even get the Xbox and PC to recognize each other properly before timing out. br / br /Now my only problem is that I want to buy more WZR-HP-G300NH. If I'm getting this good of quality between the WZR-HP-G300NH and DAP-1522 bridges, just imagine how much better it would be replacing the DAP-1522s with WZR-HP-G300NH devices, since I believe I can put them in bridge mode. br / br /One note, I did change to the DD-WRT firmware. Buffalo is supposed to be officially supporting the firmware in the very near future but you can download the unofficial version already from DD-WRT's web site. The DD-WRT firmware is much easier to navigate and Buffalo's support of the firmware was one of factors that went into me making the purchase.

1 out of 5 stars Awful product! Stay away from it!   July 28, 2010

I am quite new with routers and I needed one so I could spit my online service between my laptop and my Wii. br / br /I decided to go with this one from Buffalo because it is a japanese company and I always expect from such great quality, plus I own several USB flash memories by the same company (but bought directly from Japan). br / br /There weren't any Buffalo products near my area so I ordered via amazon. The installation was somewhat hard for me, specially considering that back then I had no idea on routers, but I managed to place it. And due to my ever mentioned lack of experience, I imagined all routers had the same problem, that images can't be fully downloaded with a single try. br / br /But what made me experience this product as a piece of garbage was the following, it no longer functioned properly after updating the latest firmware. Yes, the very same firmware that I downloaded from Buffalo's official site was the thing that made the router go kaput. br / br /Enraged, I sent the router back to amazon and I asked for credit over getting the same product brand new since I knew the same thing will happen again. br / br /Next thing that happened is that many recommended me a Netgear router, and so I went to my local Walmart to get one and the difference with the Buffalo one is quite big by far. Pictures were able to download easy with no need of constant refreshing. br / br /Also, I never managed to work the router with my external hard drive as it says, and the AOSS didn't work with my Wii, when the Wii was made for it. br / br /At the end, this router is not worthy any money as it crashes just for updating it! But have I lost trust on Buffalo as a company? So far, other products by them have been so far good. But could it be because I had to get them from Japan, and they send trash overseas? Couldn't get a Buffalo router from Japan as they are too expensive over there.

I got this product to replace my existing Wireless G. What I need most is the range. This product is very good. But still not not good enough to get to my pool side. I have to re-locate it to new location. It's working perfectly now. br /It's effortless to set up. However, after I re-located it, I could not log on again. I have to call the customer service. It's very helpful and solved the problem. However, I had to wait for 50 minutes to get through. br / br /Overall, I liked it. I can watch instant movie online by my pool side.

5 out of 5 stars Works like a champ with DD-WRT firmware   July 26, 2010
Shawn Clover (San Francisco)
I never tried out the Buffalo firmware--first thing out of the box I loaded on DD-WRT open-source firmware. DD-WRT can be frustrating at first, especially when trying to figure out the convoluted way of adding multiple DHCP reservations, but once I got everything set up, the router performs like a champ. br / br /I'm on a 100MB/s up/down shared pure ethernet connection for internet, and the router handles at least 70MB/s up and down with no problem. I have a full-time server running non-stop torrents, flac music, HD video, etc, along with various media clients and other machines on my gig-E network, and the router has handled everything perfectly. I can't say the same about the D-link DIR655 that I replaced with the Buffalo--the D-link often choked with the workload I threw at it. br / br /Wireless N is noticeably stronger from the Buffalo than the D-link as well. Very impressive router.

4 out of 5 stars A solution for seamless wireless distribution   July 18, 2010

I have been struggling with spotty wireless coverage in my house. I tried several range extenders and position, but they were either unreliable or still left me with vast patches of "dead-zones". After several months of research I settled on a combination of Buffalo Tech.'s WZR-HP-G300NH with WHR-HP-G300N. The former is the "master" router and the latter "slave" access point. The setup was a struggle, since the instructions were not clear on how to activate and setup the WDS function in the two wireless devices. After a frustrating four hour tinkering, I gave up and called Buffalo's customer service and was prepared to take the units back if they did not solve my problem. I was pleasantly surprised by the quick response and knowledgeable guidance that they provided. Within a half-hour I was up and running and now I don't have any dead spots in my house. The two units are communicating extremely well and the speed of the wireless communications has improved tremendously. Of course, I have disabled AOSS and WPS functions on the router and the AP, Don't know what will happen if I reactivate either or both of these functions! br / br /My recommendation: If you need to do this, ensure you have two Buffalo units to setup. It is much easier with customer support and overall reliability.
