2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed   September 5, 2010

I bought this router a couple weeks ago based on good reviews received. However, my experience so far in the last two weeks is not consistent with those reviews.
I have two laptops. One is wired to this router and the second one (an ASUS EEE PC901) runs wireless through the router when my wife is using the wired one. I am only using the wireless for one hour daily at most. This new router has dropped connection twice in the last two weeks. Fortunately, it re-connected itself within 1 minute or two. My worry is that it may happen again when I am doing online banking. I have used my second laptop for two years when I travel oversea or visit my family out of town. It has never had any disconnection issue. It appears this disconnection issue is in this new router. I am considering to return it to AMAZON.

Another issue was the installation instructions described in the guide are conflicting with the sticker taped on the ports where it says "Please run the CD first". If you follow the instructions in the guide, your modem, router and laptop are supposed to be powered off when you reach this step in the installation guide. So it would be difficult to run the CD with your laptop powered off. Besides, both the guide and CD never mention when to turn on the modem and router. I followed the CD with modem and router powered off. Then an error ocurred for no connection obviously becausez the router and modem were still powered off.

4 out of 5 stars Good, when it works.   September 2, 2010

The setup was easy, everything went smoothly. Until I unplugged the wireless router. It stopped working after I replugged the power back in. It took about 2 days to figure out what went wrong; I didn't assume that unplugging the power would change the settings. Other than that, good router.

Hi I realize this is a review for a tp-link router, but I figured I would get into the story of how I came to buy this one. I actually purchased a belkin router about a year ago to replace my old linksys wireless G router. The belkin router I had was great, paid about 60 bucks for it . I had some major problems setting it up, but after I reached a decent person at support they had me up an running and I had no complaints, then we had a storm and my router got zapped. I purchased a new belkin play router for about 70 and it took me 4 hours and 2 different people at tech support to get it set up. Then it worked when it wanted to. I spent 3 days of it dropping signal and losing connection before I was on amazon to look for a new one. I had it narrowed down to this TP link and a D-link router, which were with 10 bucks of each other. They both had decent reviews, however the d-link one had 4 star over 1000 reviews, but there were 153 that were 1 star. This tp-link had only 13 reviews but was rated 5 stars, all reviews were 4 or 5. I decided to go with the TP-link, a little cheaper and all good reviews. It arrived today and I let my sons play xbox live and try to go online for awhile, not knowing how long the internet would be out. I then told them it was time and went in the room where the modem was, and hooked it up. I use all wireless, but followed the directions for once and started off hooking it up with the network cable. About 5 minutes later I went out and connected to it on my desktop and xbox 360 wirelesly. I told my kids they could go back on and they said, right dad, whatever. I told them again, seriously go on. They were so excited. So yea I have only had it hooked up for about 30 minutes, but it is great so far. Easy set up, no dropped connections, and fast page loading. I would highly reccommend this router. I use it to connect wirelesly to a desktop, laptop, 360, and printer. Very great so far. If something changes I will edit my review or write a new one. PS I now use a surge protector that has the phone line going through it for my DSL. IT came through the phone line and zapped the router and my other sons xbox 360 ethernet port, which makes it so it will not work, but somehow the modem was left unscaved. I hope this helps anyone in the market for a wireless router.

5 out of 5 stars Good deal on WiFi router - be sure to reset SECURITY when firmware updated   August 31, 2010
Flashlight (San Rafael, CA USA)
This WiFi Router provides me with 4 Ethernet ports & a strong WiFi signal in my home, which is just what I need as my iPhone is filled with WiFi enabled Apps, but gets miserable 3GS signal in my area from AT&T. Be sure when you do go to the manufacturer's firmware update link:[...], which provides updates every few months, that you totally review (and manually reset) the defaults, which default to 'naked security' settings. You'll want to reset a) username and b) password, and c) timezone and d) SSID (the name the router uses when it's broadcasting) and e) the SECURITY level to as high as whatever iPhone or iPad or laptop or other device you use in WiFi, and d) a password for this higher security. Then look for the 'reboot button'. This is not the same as pulling the power plug and starting again. The 'reboot button' when pressed takes maybe a minute to update the firmware - be sure you don't unplug the power during that firmware updating, or you may make your router unusable. Anyway - it's a very nice WiFi Router for a modest price.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money   August 31, 2010

Easy to setup. I installed it in the basement of my 3-story town home. The computer on the top floor has no problem connecting. Remember to download the update and install it on the router. I have not used the USB port yet. The wired ports are gigabyte ports as well.

I have had two different Netgear routers die suddenly on me and could be revived. I hope this lasts longer. I relied on other's feedback and I am happy with my decision.
