lousy documentation September 6, 2010 Benjamin Crowell D-link has apparently decided that it's cheaper to hire tech support people in the Phillipines to read from scripts than it is to write documentation for their products. I'm sure that works out great financially for them, but it's a huge waste of time for the end-user. I spent a long time on the phone with one of their employees, who seemed like a nice lady but who had no idea what was going on.
On the box, the minimum system requirements are listed as Windows Vista, Windows XP, or MacOS X. But when you open the box and look at the poster with the setup requirements, they only give documentation for Windows. There is also a longer manual on a PDF file on a CD, but that manual also only gives instructions for Windows (on p. 88).
The documentation also suggested using two methods of configuration (PIN or PBC), each of which only seems to work if your router is also a D-link router. Only by trial and error was I able to find a different method of configuration that would work with a non-D-link router.
The documentation is all written in subliterate English, which makes it very hard to understand.
Disappointing August 24, 2010 Jacob Shalev (Lawrence, NY USA) I tried to use this is a range extender and failed miserably. Although I am adept at configuring cabled and wireless routers, this one was a stumper. Almost no useful online help. Considering that my router is D-Link (DIR-655) I expected this to work but it does not.
I have returned this item to Amazon (simple and smooth), bought instead a D-Link DIR-628 wireless router, configured it as an Access Point (much better documented, basically disable DHCP and PnP) and I got my range extended! You could do this if you have a couple of wired spots where you could place this Access Point. In my case I has a wired spot on the second floor where I connected the second router (DIR 628) and I now get excellent Wi-Fi connectivity for the iPhone, iPad and Laptops used upstairs.
So two D-Link products, one designed to extend the range and, for me, was a waste of time (I would have given it zero stars if I could). The second is a versatile router that allowed me to extend the reach of my network with a few configuration changes. Both cost about the same...
Fail July 25, 2010 A. Silver (Texas) I was trying this product in the capacity of a range extender.
The "setup wizard" was misleading, taking me to dead ends that didn't work. The interface was unintuitive. Once set up (after an hour of frustration), no noticeable increase in wireless range or reliability was observed. This is despite multiple tests on positioning and signal strength.
I'm returning it and getting my money back.
Does what it's supposed to do! July 11, 2010 Sara Nelson (DC area) We were getting a weak internet signal on the upper floor of our home, due to the router being in a location far from most of the rooms upstairs. We put this in our living room and it works very well. Easy to set up, just follow the directions in the package. I would recommend this to anyone with a weak internet signal in some locations of a home or business.
This thing is a DOG - not worth the trouble July 4, 2010 jkr66stang (Seattle, WA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this to serve as a repeater to my Linksys 610N. I am really surprised at the lack of documentation and the glitchiness of the equipment itself. The instructions for Windows 7 show Vista screenshots. Not a big deal - I know my way around network sharing on Windows 7. All the password issues mentioned in other reviews are correct... it is just plain bizarre behavior and can set you back during setup.
That aside, the documentation has huge gaps in it. So much so that I can assure you this device and accompanying manual (online version included) are not nearly enough for 98% of the population. That aside, I set it up using the directions (filling in with my own knowledge) and the thing worked off and on. Then I did a hard reset and set it up manually - got it all nice and tidy and then set it up and sure enough it performed the same way - on and off. Finally I looked at some forums and tried some alternates. No change. It all leads me to believe that this thing was not well tested in the shop, not well documented at corporate, and is pretty much useless.
If you are not VERY familiar with networking, I would stay away from this product. Even if you are, I would still pass on it - I am returning it. Hope this helps you avoid the same hassles.
