| Customer Reviews: Cable is non removable August 27, 2010 Film Lover 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Unlike the USB 2.0 cable, you cannot unplug and use your own firewire cable, this cable is connected to the port and is non removable. Disappointed to say the least. I would like to be able to remove the cable, use a longer cable or just plug in the adapter especially for storage. Why is the usb adapter capable, but not the firewire 800?
40-95 % speed increase over USB2 August 7, 2010 GreenGuy (Redondo Beach CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In brief copying tests, read/write speeds increased from 17/24 MB/s using the USB2 cable to 33/33 MB/s using the FW800 cable. I simply copied zip archives from/to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro with 7200 RPM drive and the 5400 RPM Seagate drive. Copying my iTunes library was also noticeably faster, although I didn't time it.
I didn't check for the heat issue mentioned by other reviewers, and yes the cable is a bit short, about 19 inches, but I wouldn't call it unsuitable for desktop use - depends on your desktop and intended use. I'm happy to have a second connection option for off-site backup.
Heat too August 7, 2010 industrial design student 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I experienced the same heat issue that "T. Lin "rlin83"" described in his/her review. It was very hot indeed, tho np to touch. However I didn't unplug it after noticing the heat n kept it working for Time Machine's first backup for about 2 hours nonstop. The temperature did not raise n was pretty consistent during the whole period. And it cooled down pretty quickly once unplugged. I assume that Seagate is perfectly aware of this issue since the heat becomes noticeable after only a few minutes n therefor should be ok, tho unpleasant. I just downloaded my receipt pdf in case I need to use the warranty for this potential problem cause (im the kinda person that don't keep receipts).
Happy with everything else.
Lightweight and Fast but has design flaws July 8, 2010 T. Lin (Fairfax, VA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This Firewire 800 cable adapter is small and light featuring fast Firewire800 transfer rate. HOWEVER - this thing gets HOT!! After leaving it plugged in for 10 minutes, the connector became noticeably warm to touch. I disconnect it and felt the metal connector - it's quite uncomfortably warm to touch which made me concerned because the USB 2.0 adapter that comes with my GoFlex 500 GB does not get this hot (not even close). Furthermore, the short FireWire 800 connector cable is integrated to the dock / not detachable - it's not suitable for desktop use due to the short cable length. Overall I am afraid the long term durability of the cable due to the extreme amount of heat put out by this cable.
